Our saddles combine timeless logic and aesthetics with modern materials and manufacturing processes.
The -5 to 5,5mm thick- full grain leather is strictly selected for its thickness regularity, resistance and visual aspect.
The rump leather we use is bought « natural », and the coulour is done in house, using tint, not paint. Tinting the raw leather ourselves allows us to control the leather quality. All our saddles start with the same raw material.
All the cutting, shaping and break-in is made on specially conceived machines.
From conception to manufacture, everything is done to keep the integrity of the grain and guarantee the saddle's durability. Hence the conical brass washers, reducing strain on the leather.
The structure of the saddle, with its stainless spring steel or massive titanium rails, its injected backplate and nose make the Berthoud saddle durable, easy to take apart, and comfortable.
The rear part of the saddle, the backplate, is injected in a material used for ski shoes fixations. It is hard-wearing, insensitive to cold, water or sunlight. The choice of this material has been widely criticised, especially among cyclists for whom a leather saddle is a « vintage » saddle. However, this material is here for a reason ; it absorbs shocks and filters vibrations, has a higher resilience than steel and is thus more durable.
Another longevity factor : our rails are made of stainless spring steel or titanium. These things do not break nor need any anti-coorosion treatment.
The conical brass washers are designed by us and custom-made for us. They spread the stress on the leather and prevent damage to it. They double as a discreet support for our brand.
The brass washer-stainless steel screw-threaded insert construction allows easy disassembling of the whole saddle with just one Torx screwdriver and an Allen key.
The screws and washers are located behind the « sitting area ». On our saddles, you do not sit « on the rivet », which means you do not damage your -cycling- pants on sharp rivets.
To further reduce the pressure on the perineal nerve, increase comfort and reduce the risk of genital numbness, we now offer our touring models in « open » version. Our testers were enthusiastic about the quick break-in of the saddle, immediate comfort and even more important the comofrt on long distances.
The names of our saddles will probably be known among the francophile cycling aficionados among you. For those not familiar with French cycling hot spots, here is a brief explanation :
Our Titanium-railed saddles are named after famous Alps mountain passes : col des Aravis (1486m), col d'Agnel (2744m), col du Galibier (2642m), col de Vars (2108m).
Our Stainless steel-railed saddles are named after famous Pyrénées mountain passes: col d'Aspin (1489m), col du Soulor (1474m), col de Marie-Blanque (1035m), col de Menté (1349m).
To choose a saddle, the cyclist's morphology, intended use and the type of bicycle used are to be considered. The best saddle in the world will be no use if your bicycle is not adapted to your morphology, physiology or practice.
